When I was young, Nickelodeon was my
channel. I LOVED it. There were so many great shows on. From Doug to
Clarissa Explains It All. I can't forget to mention its flagship show
for a long time, You Can't Do That On Television. Not to mention the
game shows that were strictly for kids. Finders Keepers, Legends Of
The Hidden Temple, and GUTS. I thought GUTS, which was a kids
American Gladiators, was a show that would have been cool to be on.
Of all of these awesome shows there was one show that ruled them all.
Double Dare.
Back then I lived in Tampa, Florida
which is not very far from Nickelodeon's home at the time, Orlando.
Word got out that there were tryouts being held so you can imagine my
excitement. A friend and I begged our parents to take us there. I was
probably around the age of 12 years old at this point. To our relief
they agreed to take us to the tryouts. When I say there were a lot
of people, I mean there were A LOT of people. More than I could have
ever imagined, thus making our chances of getting on slimmer and
slimmer in my young mind.
They were going by rounds of
competitions so the first round would happen then they would
eliminate the worst of the bunch. Then the second round would happen
and so on and so on.
The first challenge had both
participants putting a spoon in their mouth while transporting an egg
from one spoon to the other without using their hands. Each
participant had to stand about ten to fifteen feet across from each
other while transporting the egg to the other. I can't express how
difficult this was. Needless to say by the title of this site, things
did not go to well for yours truly. We didn't make it out of the
first round. I remember being disappointed but not devastated because
there were just so many people at this event. It was a little
overwhelming.
So that is my Double Dare story,
admittedly it's not as good of a story as if I had actually made it
onto the show. Still I thought I would share it because I'm a huge
fan of nostalgia. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet Marc
Summers; alas they only saved that for the elite few that actually
appeared on the show.
It's the only game show I ever tried out
for. I kick myself for not trying more when I've had the opportunity.
Wheel Of Fortune came to Knoxville, TN a few years ago and for some
odd reason I didn't go try out for it. The mid 30's version of me
likes to makes excuses for things that take me out of my comfort
zone. At the very least I should have gone in honor of my Grandmother
because it was one of her favorite shows. Well besides Price Is
Right; oh how I would love to play Plinko.
I often wonder how awesome it would
have been to be on Double Dare. Granted it probably would not have
changed my life but man, what an experience I would have had.
