The first time I saw “The Revelation” Shane Marx wrestle it blew my mind.
It was the Main Event of the very first Platinum Championship Wrestling show I ever attended. The match was a Four-Way featuring Davey Richards – whose name I recognized, Chip Day – who I knew from Dragon*Con Wrestling, some other dude, and Shane Marx. The first three guys have a certain physique. A look that says “pro wrestler”. They’re smaller and agile-looking. They look fast and hungry.
And then Shane Marx went and put on this amazing show. He was fast. He was high-flying. He didn’t even come close to getting winded. He was fluid and electric and defied every expectation I had of him.
It was a – dare I say it? – revelation.
See what he did there?
So I was a fan of Shane Marx from that day forward. For the next year I delighted in every victory and agonized over every defeat – most of which were as the result of Empire screwjobs. Marx was – like a certain Son of a Plumber – a Common Man. He isn’t cut, he isn’t a model. He’s real. One of us. But just gifted with a talent for wrestling.
And then on November 11th, 2011 (yeah – 11-11-11) Marx betrayed the organization that he had previously held so dear. In the match that determined the fate of a promotion, Marx made a shocking turn and single-handedly gave the match and control of Platinum Championship Wrestling to the Empire.
At Sacred Ground Chapter Three this Saturday, nearly a year later, Marx is defending the Empire Wrestling Championship against PCW Champion “Demigod” Mason in a match that will determine the fate of the company.
I was lucky enough to be able to convince Marx to go 13 Questions with Phantom Troublemaker.
1) What was your very first experience in pro wrestling?
A) I've been watching it since I was a kid, but my first real experience with pro wrestling was when my mom took me and my older brother to out very first wrestling show. It was at the spectrum in Philly.
2) What was your favorite toy when you were a kid?
A) I can't pick just one, but I'd probably have to say my favorite would be any of my Transformers.
3) What is one album everybody should own?
A) Hmmm...... Flight of the Conchords.
4) How did you become involved with Empire/PCW?
A) I found the training school in 2004 , I was originally set to go to the late "Killer" Kowalski's school in Malden, MA, but it shut down. But I guess that wasn't meant to be.
5) Can you tell me about your first Empire/PCW experience?
A) My first experience was me standing on the outside of the ring wearing a ski mask to make sure no one got involved in the main event match at that time. Never been more nervous.
6) What would be your dream match?
A) Hands down Shane Marx vs Shawn Michaels.
7) What is your favorite piece of gear you’ve ever owned?
A) I had the blue pleather shorts with my initials on the right side of the shorts and my last name on the back. I got it made by EZ Money. I think the shorts are still on his website.
8) Sacred Ground is the Big One. How much is at stake?
A) The stakes have never been higher. One shall stand , one shall fall. It's the last stand for either PCW or the Empire. As big as 11/11/11 was, Sacred Ground 3 is going to be massive.
9) Which actor do you feel like you could sit and watch for hours no matter what they were doing and why?
A) Samuel L. Jackson. Cause he'll act in anything and I'll glad watch it no matter how good or bad it is.
10) What inspires you to do what you do?
A) My family and my passion to be the very best in this business.
11) Who has your back at Sacred Ground?
A) My Empire.
12) Is there a movie that should never be remade and if so which one?
A) I think it's already being made, I'm not too sure, but Robocop should never remade. You can't recapture the awesomeness of that movie. It's the same reason the new Total Recall sucked to me compared the original.
13) Closer – can you cut a promo for Sacred Ground 3?
A) On Sept. 29 Porterdale, GA. You're going to bear witness end of a war. A war that has raged on for well over a year. The war between The Empire and PCW will end once and for all at Sacred Ground: Chapter 3. I have exorcised every PCW demon that has tried to take what was mine. Chip Day, Terry Lawler, Simon Sermon, Fred Yehi, Dany Only, Jon Williams and so on. Leaving one more demon to extracted. And at Sacred Ground: Chapter 3, I will exorcise my final demon. I will beat the DemiGod Mason, reclaim my PCW title, become the undisputed Empire champion, and FINALLY rid the world of PCW forever. And then my soul will be cleansed, purged of the evil that is PCW. And that is not just the end of days for PCW. That is my.......Revelation!!
There it is, folks. This one is for everything and Marx has proven time and again that he is not one to be fucked with. I may not want to see the end of Platinum Championship Wrestling, but I find it very hard to doubt this man’s conviction or abilities.
Do whatever you have to do to be in Porterdale, GA Saturday night for Sacred Ground Chapter Three. I can guarantee you it will be a night of professional wrestling like no other.
