Happy Birthday to Me

Today is my birthday so I wanted to do something lazy. Er, special. I meant special.
I’ve written over 500 posts now for Needless Things, well over 500,000 words. Most of the posts are good – they serve their purpose. I wanted to talk about something and did and got my point across. Some are very good. I wanted to talk about something, got all caught up in it, and produced a piece that went a little farther than I had intended. I end up loving these even if they might be about something I didn’t start out thinking too much of.

A very few posts are great. Which means that I love them and they have a lot of hits.

But today is all about me, so I’m just going to link you to my favorite posts. Let’s get it on.

-Game of Thrones Season 1 Recap

Man, this was a huge undertaking. It’s recent, so I’m hesitant to put it here but it’s one of my favorite things I’ve done. Not only am I a huge fan of the show (a recent development), but I just think I did good work on this recap. Particularly when combined with the pictures. I sat down one night and went through pretty much the whole season over the course of a couple of hours, scanning for good shots. I had a few in mind when I sat down and got pretty much all of them. These recaps are fairly popular, too. More people read them every day, though for some reason parts 1 and 4 get the most hits.

-Top Fifty Albums

This was the first huge undertaking for the blog. I actually posted it over on my MySpace blog first (which is where Needless Things started because I was too intimidated by a standalone blog) and moved it here. Honestly this thing could be refined and updated, but I’m still quite proud of it.

At one point some douchenozzle was dismissive of this one because it was not done in whatever format Rolling Stone magazine uses; I did it in my own fashion using personal preference over any kind of professional criteria. The day somebody pays me six figures to write is the day I’ll stick to anybody else’s opinions on how things should be done. Also, if said douchenozzle had read the intro he would have seen my explanation on how things worked. I find a lot of commenters – here and elsewhere – do not read intros. Sometimes I think they don’t even read the whole article.

-AT-AT Review

I put more effort into this review than any other toy review on the site. It is rare that I will feel the need to shoot video – I still do not understand the need for video in a review of a static toy – but I knew this thing demanded it. I am very happy with this review and to this day still love this toy. Lil’ Troublemaker gets to play with it quite a bit and while he is very careful with toys he knows are mine, he is still only four. But the AT-AT has proved worthy.

-He-Man Versus Superman Comic

I wrote this as part of my review of the Toys R Us Exclusive 2-pack, but it went long and I felt it could stand up on its own. Looks like I was right, as it's proven pretty popular.

-Scareglow Tricks Everybody Into Cosplaying

I absolutely hated this thing by the time I was done with it, as it took forever. I don't see how people who actually put effort into photos do it. But now that it's done and posted I really like it. I need to use Scareglow more. And Feminist Batgirl.

-Doctor Who – The Story Thus Far

I don't know how good I am at recaps, but a lot of people seem to think I do an alright job. This was all totally off the top of my head and I love it, regardless of the quality.

-Review of Batman & Robin

I hated this movie when I saw it in the theater – yes, the theater – and now it is one of my favorite movies ever. I didn't realize that until I wrote this review, though.

-I Warn Everybody to Floss

I had a root canal a couple of years ago and the experience leading up to it was just awful. I wrote this to do my part to keep it from happening to anybody else.

-The Post Joey Belladonna Read

I mean, I'm sure he's a regular reader and has checked out tons of my posts, but this is the one he mentioned when I met him and he knew who I was(!). Also, I do really love Anthrax and like this post a lot.

-Batman XXX Review

This is the most-read post on Needless Things at 7,690 views as of this writing. Watching that movie made me feel extremely dirty and sullied the good image of Batman '66 for me for quite some time.

This was the first of the superhero porn movies from Axel Braun and I thought reviewing it might get me some attention, so I sent the review out to a ton of different websites. I didn't necessarily expect reposts or links or anything and I sure didn't get any. I did get an e-mail back from, though. She enjoyed the review but thought the whole premise was too nasty and weird to link to. This confuses me a bit given the content of her site, but she's super nice any time we communicate so I'll go with it.

There you go. I hope you have enjoyed these in the past or maybe just clicked on them for the first time today.

I’ll be at the PCW Arena tomorrow night getting drunk and yelling at wrestlers if anybody wants to come out and celebrate.

  1. Happy birthday Phantom! I, myself, turned 33 last Wednesday.

I never got into Nashville Pussy(they put on a great show), although I did see them in concert.(I think it was with Suicidal Tendencies & ICP).

I actually come her for the read. Not every topic hits chords with me, but your writing just makes it entertaining. I will read everything you post, with the exception of Doctor Who(not the face!). But that's just because I will have no idea what you're talking about. It may be a show I would actually like, if I were to watch it. But I am so behind on movies that I probably wouldn't be able to watch it anytime soon.

    1. Happy birthday to you as well! Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you're entertained. And I don't hold anybody's lack of interest in Doctor Who against them. It isn't for everybody. Some people just have terrible taste (just kidding!). Please keep enjoying Needless Things!

  2. Happy Birthday! I'm glad you put up these links, I only found this site fairly recently (maybe within the last year) while I was googling for MOTUC reviews of older figures that I was considering picking up from ebay or amazon. After going through several of your MOTUC stuff I started looking at other things and have made it a regular, meaning at least twice a week, internet stop.

So now with these links I can go back to find things I haven't seen yet.

    1. Awesome! That was sort of the idea. Well, that and I'm doing what I can to spread posts out. This was an easy one.
