I had just bought the DC Direct Sinestro Corps Mongul when I found out I was going to have to buy this one, too. I just can’t say no to a good Arkillo.
First Glance: Well, this Mongul isn’t nearly as big, but is clearly much more impressive than the DC Direct one.
Sculpt: Yeah, in all honesty; DC Direct should probably be a little embarrassed by their Mongul. He’s big, and that’s about all he has going for him compared to this guy. Well, that and the fact that his chest logo is sculpted and not a fucking sticker. Yes, Mattel’s Mongul sports a shitty, paper sticker as a chest emblem.
But let’s talk about the sculpt. Every inch of this guy looks menacing and awesome, he’s covered in spikes and muscles. He’s articulated as well as any DCU Classics figure, which is impressive given his bulk. Don’t get me wrong, the DCD Mongul may dwarf this one, but DCUC’s Mongul is still a big guy when compared to the rest of the line.
His face is much more detailed than the larger model – which is kind of weird when you think about it – and has a nice angry grimace going on.
While this Mongul actually has better hands as far as being an action figure and actually being able to hold things goes; DCD’s Mongul has a bunch of Yellow Rings on his fingers and looks cooler because of it. But this figure is just so much damn better.
I know I keep referencing the DCD version. Don't worry - I have a comparison picture at the end. It's a little shocking.
Design: This is another example of a fantastic paint job from Mattel, probably on par with Black Hand. The pinks may be a little too pink for some, but it looks a heck of a lot better than the almost-all-purple design of DCD’s. And that’s coming from someone who wears a lot of purple for a white guy.
All of the spikes and studs and whatnot look very nice. No bleeding or overspraying is visible on the Mongul I bought.
And then there’s the shitty chest sticker. Not okay. Not at all. C’mon, Mattel – you’re better than that. Well, maybe not; but that sticker is still a piece of shit. I actually had to move mine back in place after I opened Mongul. And it doesn’t even look good. It’s immediately apparent that it is a sticker. It doesn’t blend in with the rest of the figure’s deco at all.
Accessories: Zilch, except for the 3D glasses.
Packaging: I like the GLC packaging quite a bit. Not only is it a nice break from the yellow DCUC look, The blisters themselves have a new and interesting shape. Not to mention the holes punched in the side that allow you a nice pre-purchase whiff of that sweet, sweet New Toy Smell.
Overall: Dammit. I’m never going to make any sweet, sweet eBay cash. I just can’t part with this guy. He’s too good. As much as I like the size of DCD Mongul, if I had to choose I’m pretty sure I’d go with this one. The big boy just looks like some kind of crappy 90’s toy in comparison.
4 out of 5
Minus a point for the sticker. Consider him lucky I didn’t dock two, then he’d be the same score as the big, shitty one. Which in retrospect should possibly be a “2” anyway.
Until next time, stay creepy
